About
Located in the far west of the Falklands’ archipelago, New Island’s extraordinary wildlife is matched by stunning scenery and important heritage sites. Owned and managed by local wildlife charity Falklands Conservation (incorporating NICT) it is a key conservation and scientific research site. New Island is the most remote island in the Falklands serviced by local flights and there are significant logistical challenges getting to/from the island.
Dramatic cliffs contrast with sandy bays and natural harbours. Wildlife adventures are a short walk from the settlement, where spectacular sea cliffs rise to over 168m (550 feet) forming the home to a raucous colony of black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins.
With thirty-nine breeding birds, New Island is recognised as both a Key Biodiversity Area and Important Bird Area. Bird encounters abound with the opportunity to see Black-browed albatross, slender-billed prions, gentoo, Magellanic and southern rockhopper penguins, both striated and crested caracaras and peregrine falcons.
Rich inshore waters help marine mammals flourish, with breeding groups of South American fur seals, sea lions, and Peale’s dolphins. Landsend Bluff offers an opportunity to sit and watch fur seals sunning themselves on the cliffs.
You can also visit the remains of the Falkland’s only land-based whaling station at South Harbour and a small museum in the Settlement.
Day tours are also available to help you maximise your sightseeing during your stay.
New Island is an incredibly remote destination with aircraft landing dependant on weather conditions. It is not unusual to have stays delayed or extended, however, flexible travel plans are rewarded with an experience of a lifetime. Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) flights to New Islands are limited to 3 adults or equivalent due to airstrip limitations. Due to these logistical difficulties we currently only accept bookings from Falkland Island residents or from scientists, film crews and overseas tourists who will be spending several weeks in the Falkland Islands and whose schedule is sufficiently flexible to allow for possible delays. New Island cannot accept responsibility for any delays & consequent costs. Due to the logistics of New Island if guest departure is delayed our policy is to charge for additional nights at the set rates.
A selection of food items are available in the New Island store.
There is mobile/cell coverage in the Settlement only at New Island.
