Sustainable Travel
Sustainable tourism in the Falkland Islands
Sustainability in tourism is a hot topic today. Tourists are increasingly demanding that their trips have a minimal impact on a destination and also make a positive contribution in some way. Tourism providers therefore are in the best place to help their customers to act responsibly by embedding sustainability throughout their business. This not only involves being an eco-friendly business through reuse and recycle schemes, minimising water and energy usage and employing effective waste management practices but also harnessing customer actions to provide benefits to local economies and communities. This means enabling visitors to interact more meaningfully with the places and people they visit to provide a more authentic and immersive experience on both sides.
Increasingly, tourism providers around the world are incorporating sustainability and reponsible tourism practices into their travel products. Sustainability schemes are very common around the world, particularly in destinations that are home to extraordinary wildlife and habitats, pristine wildernesses and vibrant local communities.
Excellence in Tourism
Excellence in Tourism is a new scheme for the Falkland Islands that seeks to embed sustainability across all its tourism businesses and incorporates both the Accommodation Accreditation Scheme and the Green Seal Scheme under one umbrella.
Green Seal Scheme
The Green Seal Scheme is a bespoke Sustainability Certification scheme that has been created especially for Accommodation Providers, Food and Drink Outlets and Local Tour Operators in the Falkland Islands to support them to adopt and maintain eco-friendly and responsible business practices. The scheme also encourages guests to make a positive contribution to life on the Islands by getting involved in daily life, engaging closely with communities and activities and making sustainable choices, such as using resuable water bottles and choosing local produce.
Accreditation Scheme for Falklands' Accommodation Providers
The Accreditation Scheme for Falklands' Accommodation Providers involves a grading scheme whereby properties are rated from from One Star to Five Star. Properties can be additionally awarded Gold or Silver in recognition of exceptional quality within each of the star rating bands. A further Breakfast Award is given to those serviced accommodation providers that serve an over-and-above quality breakfast to their guests.
Members of either or both schemes are awarded a single badge which outlines all the ratings and awards they have achieved.
