FAQs
What languages are spoken?
UK English is the Islanders’ language. Some residents also speak Spanish.
Can I spend US$?
The Falkland Island pound is the Islands’ currency; equivalent to the UK£ which is accepted everywhere. Many shops, restaurants and accommodation providers will accept US$, euros and credit cards but check before you buy.
What should I bring with me?
Layers of clothing to allow for changing weather conditions including a waterproof jacket and strong walking boots if you plan on walking outside Stanley. Sunscreen is essential, it is very easy to burn. If you take regular prescription medicine, ensure you have enough for your stay and contingencies.
Where can I see penguins?
Penguins are easy to find, even if you only visit for a day. Gypsy Cove is just 8.5 km (5 miles) from central Stanley where you can see Magellanic Penguins. Volunteer Point, home to a large colony of king as well as gentoo and Magellanic penguins, is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Stanley; you must have a local guide. Rockhoppers can be seen in day-trip from Stanley to Murrell Farm. Many penguin tours are offered to visitors from cruise ships. If you are here for a longer stay, most popular destinations have penguin colonies nearby.
Are there any dangerous animals?
There are no amphibians or reptiles. Insects are small and pose no threats. The Countryside Code recommends a distance of 6 metres (20 feet) is maintained from wildlife, also not to get between an animal and its path to the sea. By following this sensible advice, there should be no danger from marine mammals and birds.
Are there any remaining landmines?
No. The Falkland Islands were officially declared mine-free in November 2020 following an extensive clearance programme. However, suspicious objects may occasionally be seen. In the event of finding any suspect item, DO NOT touch it; take a photograph, note the location using whatever technology is available and inform the Royal Falkland Islands Police immediately. Better a false alarm than an injury.
Can I buy food outside Stanley?
Many destinations outside Stanley are very remote. You should always check with your accommodation provider in advance if food can be supplied at your destination as you may need to take everything you need from Stanley and can enjoy stocking up before setting off. It may be possible to organise ready-made meals to bring with you.
