Wildlife and Penguins
For wildlife experiences, the Falkland Islands are second to none. Any wildlife photographer or movie producer will enthuse of the ease of capturing photographs and footage of our special species and vast colonies of seabirds. Untouched but accessible, here you can see that ‘nature is still in charge’. Up close and personal, in many locations you will have the wildlife all to yourself and with no barriers – we ask only that you take seriously the personal responsibility to safeguard what you see.
Sometimes called, ‘the penguin islands’, our five breeding species of penguin are easy to locate and fun to observe. Volunteer Point is home to a large king penguin colony of over a thousand birds. Enjoy the amazing sounds of the young fluffy chicks, the petulant attitudes of the ‘teenagers’ and the majesty of the adult birds. Gentoo, magellanic and rockhopper penguin colonies can be found at various locations; each species with its own delightful characteristics which entertain for hours on end. Look out for the elusive macaroni penguin in amongst the rockhoppers.
The Falklands are a birders’ paradise with much to see. Southern giant petrels soar along the coast, striated caracaras are quick to find anything worth stealing, the stunning black-browed albatross circles effortlessly above – there are many rare birds to delight specialists including our endemic species, the Cobb’s wren, Falkland flightless steamer duck and tussac bird.
The Islands are also home to the world’s largest pinniped, the elephant seal. Be careful not to get too close to these huge animals as they slumber along the shore. They move surprisingly quickly and a sparring match between bulls will take your breath away, as they snort in rivalry and demonstrate a fearsome side to their otherwise lazy behaviour.
South American fur seals and southern sea lions are found in many locations. Over twenty cetaceans – whales and dolphins – have been recorded including inshore and offshore populations. Increasing numbers of endangered sei whales are being spotted and killer whales – orcas – are annual visitors.
Many wildlife colonies are offered as half-day and day trips to cruise visitors whilst those here for a longer period of time can research destinations to be sure to include some fantastic wildlife experiences.
