Revenue from the Fisheries sector drives the Falkland Islands economy. A large proportion of Government revenue comes either directly or indirectly from fishing licence money.

Click to see a larger version The waters surrounding the Falkland Islands are rich in squid and fish. In 1986 a Conservation and Management Zone was created. The Fisheries Department has carefully managed these resources to optimise the benefits to the economy whilst ensuring that stocks are effectively managed. About one quarter of the licence revenue is re-invested in monitoring , control and biological research.

The resource is predominantly squid : Illex, fished mainly by Far Eastern vessels and Loligo, caught by Falkland Islands flagged trawlers marketed primarily in Spain and Italy. There are also significant stocks of Blue Whiting, Hake and Hoki.

Due to the high value of the Illex squid, poaching can occur. The Falkland Islands Government operates two Fishery Protection Vessels and deploys Britten Norman Islander aircraft to police the fishery.
